The Wonders of Pi Day

I think Pi Day is one of those days that dorky, utterly amazing math teachers adore all over the country. To me it's kind of a pointless day, really, but it has its perks, especially when said dorky and amazing math teachers go to the length of celebrating it in class.
My memories of this little holiday go back to sixth grade, when we begged my teacher, on hands and knee, to let us celebrate Pi Day, seeing as the other sixth grade class was, and why couldn't we have pie like they were? So my teacher printed out special math worksheets involving things that had to do with Pi, but when we came back from recess, she had bought three pies from the nearby market. I don't know why, but I loved that day; probably because it was a sunny day in March, just like today was (but at the time my allergies weren't beating me up. Lucky younger me!)
Good old March--gorgeous blue skies!
Anyway, math this year is comparable to me sitting a dark, damp cave that's too small and which drips water from the ceiling. So, in essentials, miserable. My class is comprised mostly of boys--now, I have nothing against most of them, but this group of boys are the ones that never do their work, nor do they shut up, so my math teacher is always frustrated. I swear, some people in that class must try hard to get a .4 GPA...
Having been Pi Day yesterday, the other math teacher decided to celebrate. I was downright positive that my class would not be "celebrating", judging by the 57% class average. My teacher wrote up on the board that it would be a work day, and so I dutifully got my work out like we're supposed to. My teacher got in front of the class with a little slip of green paper, and read off the names listed on it. My name was one of them (one of the seven, mind you), and he said that the people he'd just listed were the ones who had a grade in the class higher than a D, and that we could go to the other class and eat Pi and watch movies to our heart's content! Now, my grade isn't so fabulous; math really is not my subject in any way, shape or form, so I enjoyed this treat especially, and spent second period watching Up. What a good little day!

Quirky Obsessions and Days of Dreaming

Yes, I am listening to Celine Dion right now.

You can ask why, and the response you might expect to hear is probably along the lines of "I just like her music." Well I do, but the response you're going to get is, "I watched The Titanic for the first time this weekend, and now I am completely and utterly obsessed." And the fact that I'm obsessed bothers me a little, because I've been growing out of that one strange romantic stage, so I feel a little sheepish liking it so much, actually.

So, in essentials, I've thought and spoken everything Titanic-related for the past two days. I just included a Titanic reference in a story I'm writing. I've listened to "My Heart Will Go On" a grand total of three times so far, and I can guarantee you that number will have increased enormously by the end of the day. :)
And what better to suit this recent adoration than a tiny set of daydreams? Apparently, in my head, I'm a young Irish girl who met a rich woman who allowed her to come along with her on the maiden voyage of that vast ship, as part of first class. Where my daydream left off, I was trying on a beautiful cream colored dress with a blue ribbon and flowers decorating my sunhat so nicely.
And this little spot in my backyard is undoubtedly the best place to come up with these ridiculous fantasies of mine.

Around the House

I am doling out these blog posts rather rapidly, aren't I? I don't suppose that happens when a person has absolutely nothing to do. But today my post will be of a bunch of pictures, and not me rambling on and making you all fall asleep over your keyboards.

A Sore Throat and Happy Feet

Only my determination to stay up until midnight and watch movies and Full House could be the culprit of my sore throat. And so I float off to the realm of madness that you really only enter when school has become particularly difficult, and when you start to catch a cold. And I can say right now that being slightly delirious and tired isn't very fun. But is it my fault the Figure Skating competitions stretch to 11 p.m.? :)

I suppose one of the few things tethering me to sanity right now is ballet. Whenever I come home from classes, my feet are so exhausted but they're just happy because they like to dance. I can't think of any other way of putting it. But what makes me laugh is when people watch ballet and say they can easily do it. And then I smile and remember the aches and pains I went through with breaking in a new pair of Pointe shoes. Ah! Thank you for being broken in now, little shoes of satin!

Sleeping Beauty

There's always going to be something special about seeing your first professional ballet.

True, I have seen a few local versions of The Nutcracker, but Pacific Northwest Ballet is something else entirely. Such colors! Such dancing! And all the excitement from last night that trickled into today has completely exhausted me, but The Sleeping Beauty was just beautiful.
Wouldn't it be something to dance on that stage?
I've been dancing since I was five years old, so if you're wondering what that giant blue shoe-like thing is behind the title of this blog, its a porcelain ballet slipper. :)

But I'm so tired! We got home at 12 a.m. last night and I stayed up until one a.m. watching the opening ceremony for the Olympics, which we had recorded since we were going to be gone all evening. So I just thought I'd listen to some Priscilla Ahn and add another entry to this little blog. :)

Rain...Rain...Rain....

Well, I'm starting a blog. And I don't really know why. To give you little stories of how I've spent the beginning of 2010 trying to make life delightful and exciting? To blather on about how much I like my friends, my writing, my ballet classes? I'm not sure. But right now it gives me something to do.

A little bit about myself: I love writing. Dancing is one of the few things on the planet that really, really makes me happy. I'm kind of a geek when it comes to my favorite movies, and my favorite songs. I'm awkward and small and I like taking pictures with my new camera. And I most definitely love every aspect of the weather up here (call me crazy).

Right now it's grey and misty outside, and not very appealing, but I'll still like it anyway. The first thing along my "Keys to Happiness List" for today is "Don't complain and simply accept the fact that it's raining outside, which is a good excuse to make hot chocolate and have little attempts at making origami cranes." Which is exactly what I did: And I think "FAIL" should be slapped all over it. :)
A few years ago I bought some origami paper at this Asian food market we visit, and I'm not sure why I did, so I figured that now would be the time to put it to use. So I googled "how to make an origami crane", watched a video, and in the end my crane kind of looked like... well, I'll leave that to you to decide. :D
